What can I do to make my home more secure?
  • Walk around your home and view it from the burglars' eyes. What is the easiest way in? Where could someone hide if someone approached? Is there a door or window hidden from the street and neighbor's window?
  • Consult a security expert about what options are available to protect your home and property.
  • Check windows, especially on the ground floor, to be sure they have good locks and that you are using them.
  • Check exterior doors to be sure they are metal or solid core. Hollow doors should not be used in exterior applications. Be sure that each door closes tightly and does not have any wiggle room. Every door should be equipped with good locks including screen doors, storm doors, garage doors basement doors and sliding doors (sliding doors can be further secured using a dowel or broom handle in the door track). Make sure you lock up every time you leave your home. Almost half of all burglars' break in through an unlocked door or window.
  • Shrubs should be trimmed below the windows so that the burglars' cannot use them for cover while trying to break in.
  • Keep the exterior of your home well lit. Home improvement stores carry a variety of exterior lighting equipped with motion detectors.
  • Turn off the ringer on your home phone when you are away. This will prevent a burglar from being alerted to your absence.
  • Bolt window air conditioning units into the wall to prevent a burglar from removing them to gain access.
  • Discreetly dispose of boxes from new electronics equipment like a TV or Stereo. You don't want to advertise what you have inside at the curb.
  • Automatic timers for lights and TV's are a great idea when you are away.
  • Ask neighbors to pick up the mail, park in your driveway and do other things around your home when you are away for extended periods of time. This activity will deter a burglar even if he knows you are away.
